Human rights organization with international membership and scope

  • actions are based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, members write letters and mount campaigns on the behalf of people whose human rights have been violated both in Canada and abroad
  • actions include letters on the behalf of migrants and refugees, persecuted ethnic groups, the disappeared and non-violent prisoners of conscience
  • On December 10th each year in celebration of International Human Rights Day, the local group holds an Amnesty International Flag Raising and "Write-for-Rights" event at the City Hall in Barrie 
    • At 10 am, Human Rights cases are highlighted during this event and people are welcme to sign letters and petitions
    • At 11 am, the Mayor or a City Representative helps to raise the Flag in honour of International Human Rights Day
    • focus is on school groups attending, but all are welcome
  • In November ,"Write-for-Rights", is held at the Downtown Branch of the Barrie Public Library, check the library's online calendar for the date or contact the organizer at marilyn.shadowlab@gmail.com
    • letters are written to help draw attention to individuals suffering from human rights’ abuses and to offer support to Human Rights defenders around the world
    • www.amnesty.ca has a write-a-thon kit of resources and current Human Rights cases, some are ongoing and some are urgent
    • registration starts in October, anyone interested in participating should email Doreen at dtef1@yahoo.com for more information
  • holds local monthly book club in person at the Barrie Public Library on the second Thu of the month from Sep-Jun, people can also participate by zoom, see 
  • the library's online calendar for details or contact the organizer at marilyn.shadowlab@gmail.com
