Description (Service) The City of Barrie promotes recycling * residents must separate materials into 2 recycling boxes (one blue and one grey), grey for paper products and blue for container items

Grey Box

* paper products include all household paper, newspapers, magazines, catalogues, junk mail, telephone books, hardcover books if hard covers removed, box board, egg cartons and cardboard * remove all plastic wrap and food liner bags from box board and flatten * all cardboard boxes (not waxed) must be flattened and bundled no larger that 75cm x 75cm x 20cm (30 x 30 x 8 inches) and placed in or beside the blue box

Blue Box

* Containers items include glass food and beverage bottles and jars, food and beverage cans, aluminum trays, pie plates and foil, spiral cardboard cans (metal ends are recyclable as well but not the plastic strip around frozen juice containers), Tetra Pak boxes, milk and juice cartons, all plastics containers #1-7 (all plastic bottles, jugs, tubs and styrene trays and lids, rinse items) * no toys, packing Styrofoam (larger than a recycling box), motor oil or pesticide containers

Empty Aerosol Cans: Remove the lid and dispensing nozzle (if possible) from the empty can before placing it in your blue box. Aerosol cans that are not empty can pose an explosion risk in recycling facilities and must be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot

Empty Dry Paint Cans: Remove the lid to allow the remaining paint to dry inside the can and on the lid. Place both the can and the lid in your blue box. Can sizes are limited to 4 litres and under. Paint cans that are not empty must be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot

Plastic Retail & Grocery Bags: Bags must be clean and empty. Remove any receipts or other materials from the bags, put all bags inside of one bag, and then tie shut before placing in your Blue Box

To have a blue or grey box delivered (limit 2 boxes per residence) please call 705-739-4219 Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm, Barrie residents only * Blue and Grey Boxes are available for pick up at the Environmental Centre at 272 Ferndale Drive North, Tuesday to Friday, from 9:00am to 4:00pm * they are also available Saturdays at the Household Waste Depot, also located at 272 Ferndale Dr. N, please provide photo I.D. * each resident should use 2 blue boxes or one grey and one blue box to separate materials properly

Recycling bins can also be picked up at any City of Barrie Community Centre - East Bayfield Community Centre, Holly Community Centre, Allandale Recreation Centre during normal operating hours

Items from your blue and grey box may be brought to the Barrie Landfill Site to be recycled. Sorting requirements for recyclables are the same at the landfill as they are for curbside collection * recyclables and yard waste must be separated from mixed loads of garbage to qualify for "No Charge" consideration

Hours Curbside Collection: Residents are required to place recyclables at curbside on collection day by 7 am to ensure collection * collection trucks will not be sent back into areas where these materials have been placed out late

No collection on statutory holidays and collection will be one day later for the remainder of the week * collection does occur on Boxing Day, Remembrance Day and Easter Monday
