Fort Willow was developed as a half way point between Kempenfelt Bay and the Nottawasaga River enabling a continuous trade and transportation route from Lake Ontario through to Georgian Bay for many centuries

  • during the War of 1812, the British military utilized this portage route for the transport of supplies and personnel as the lower lakes were occupied by the Americans
  • Festival of Fort Willow is hosted by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority, Springwater Township, the Friends of Fort Willow and the Barrie Rotary Club
    • Annual event is held during the last weekend of Septmeber each year where visitors can experience what life was like at Fort Willow pre-European contact, during the Fur Trade and the War of 1812
    • visitors can enjoy various re-enactors as they interact with festival visitors and demonstrate their daily tasks including blacksmithing, carpentry and candle making, children's entertainment and hands-on historical displays
