Service: Environmental Services - Leaf and Yard Waste Collection

Description (Service) City of Barrie provides a curbside collection program for leaf and yard waste on the same day as garbage, organics and recyclables * leaf and yard waste is collected EVERY WEEK during the months of January, April, May, June, September, October and November and EVERY OTHER week during July, August and December * there is NO yard waste collection (including Christmas trees) during the months of February and March Leaf and yard waste must be placed curbside on the regularly scheduled collection day by 7 am * check City of Barrie's Community Information and Waste Reduction Calendar for collection areas and to determine what the regularly scheduled collection day for your area is and what week (Week A or Week B) your area is for the bi-weekly collection months (July, August, December)

Acceptable items in yard waste: leaves and brush * grass clippings * garden waste * bales of straw * tree trimmings * christmas trees (trees must not exceed 1.8m or 6 feet in length, be free of ornaments and stands) * fruit tree waste

Unacceptable items in yard waste: kitchen waste * milled lumber * stumps or tree limbs with a diameter in excess of 10 cm * tree limbs in excess of 6 ft in length * unbundled brush, street sweepings * sod, dirt and rocks * containers of yard waste that weigh more than 20 kg (45 lbs) * bundles must be no longer than 1.8 m (6 ft) in length, 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter and weigh no more than 20 kgs (45 lbs) * Christmas trees exceeding 1.8m or 6 feet in length * plastic pots and plastic packaging * garbage materials

Yard waste should be placed in a separate container from regular garbage, with lids off so the collectors can see their contents * clippings from trees and shrubs should be tied securely in small bundles to permit easy handling

Bundles must be no larger than 1.8 m (6 ft) in length, 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter and weigh no more than 20 kg (45 lbs) * containers must weigh no more than 20 kg (45 lbs)

Acceptable yard waste containers: garbage cans, bushel baskets, burlap bags, paper leaf and yard waste bags, corrugated cardboard boxes

Unacceptable yard waste containers: organics green bins, blue and grey recycling boxes, plastic bags

Organics Carts are meant for Organic material only * Blue and Grey Recycling Boxes are meant for recyclables only

Public Comments The City of Barrie has a curbside Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Program, residents can also bring leaf and yard waste to the Landfill Site * branches in excess of 4 inches in diameter will be charged the regular user rate for waste
Hours Curbside Collection: Residents are required to place yard waste at curbside on their collection day by 7 am to ensure collection * collection trucks will not be sent back into areas where these materials have been placed out late

No collection on statutory holidays * when this occurs, collection will be one day later for the remainder of the week * collection does occur on Boxing Day, Remembrance Day and Easter Monday

Landfill Drop-off: Tue-Sat 9 am-4 pm * the lane way to the landfill site can accommodate up to one hour's worth of traffic * due to higher volume of traffic on Tuesdays and Saturdays, it is recommended that you arrive at the landfill site prior to 3 pm to ensure entry * Landfill Site closed to the public on statutory holidays
