Description

Description (Service) SMART Program
  • offers exercise classes to community members 55+ who wish to improve their strength, balance and flexibility, regardless of current physical ability
  • program is available in many Retirement Homes, community locations as well as virtually across North Simcoe and Muskoka
  • program can be done standing, from a chair, or using an aide
SMART Healthy Aging Education Series
  • 12 session program available to individuals wishing to learn strategies to maintain independence and protect/promote their health
  • classes cover a variety of topics including bone health, nutrition, medication, home safety and brain health, among others
Falls Prevention
SMART Exercise classes are designed to increase strength and balance and reduce the risk of a fall
Volunteer Description Volunteers participate in a 2 day training session, mentoring as well as ongoing training and education opportunities once matched
  • Volunteers may go into the client's home to assist with the exercises for the SMART in-home program, or they lead the group exercise classes in community settings
  • VON provides extensive training and support at no cost
  • No previous fitness experience is required, just a desire to help others become more able through physical activity
  • flexible commitment of only one hour per week (or more) is all that is asked for

Mon-Fri 9 am-4 pm, up to 1 hour in duration, participants can choose to register for the class(es) of their choice

  • Residents of North Simcoe & Muskoka 55 yrs and older
  • Residents of Home and Community Care Support Services North Simcoe Muskoka catchment area

Languages English; American Sign Language; Most classes are offered in English. One class, in partnership with Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka, is taught in ASL by volunteers
