Description

Description (Service)

Provides training on how to recognize and help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis is resolved.

Course teaches:

  • how to identify when a person may be in danger
  • basic actions for mental health first aid
  • information on effective intervention and treatments
  • where and how to get help locally
  • how to recognize signs and symptoms of common mental health problems such as substance misuse, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, self injury and mood disorders
  • how to provide help during crisis situations such as overdose, suicidal behavior, panic attacks and reactions to traumatic events

CMHA Grey Bruce offers two programs, both typically held over two days. A certificate is issued upon completion of the course.

  • Mental Health First Aid - Basic Training is 12 hours long.
  • Mental Health First Aid for Adults who interact with youth is geared towards recognizing and assisting youth who may be suffering from a mental health crisis. Course is 14 hours long.

Program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

This program takes place at various locations in Bruce and Grey Counties.
