Description (Service) One of 11 regional systems established to implement the Ontario Stroke System
  • goal is to improve access to evidence-based prevention and care in order to reduce stroke incidence, mortality and residual disability
  • provides education and presentations to healthcare providers, stroke support groups, and the general public regarding stroke best practices, addressing the risk factors, the signs of stroke, and the importance of calling 9-1-1 if you are experiencing the signs of stroke
    • The signs of sroke can be remembered by thinking of the word FAST
      • F is for Face, is it drooping?
      • A is for Arms, can you raise both?
      • S is for Speech, is it slurred or jumbled?
      • T is for Time, if any of the symptoms are present it is Time to call 9-1-1 right away.
  • District Stroke Centres differ from community hospitals in that they are organized to deliver time sensitive thrombolytic stroke therapy (clot busters) for eligible patients with acute ischemic stroke on an around the clock basis.
  • District Stroke Centres also assess and triage patients for Endovascular Therapy (EVT), a clot removal procedure. EVT is performed at specialized comprehensive stroke centres outside the Central East Stroke Region.
  • The following hospitals in the Central East Stroke Network are designated District Stroke Centres:
    • Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Barrie - Enhanced District Stroke Centre
    • Mackenzie Health, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Vaughan - District Stroke Centre
    • Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare, Huntsville District Memorial Hospital, Huntsville - District Stroke Centre
    • Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Peterborough - District Stroke Centre
    • Lakeridge Health (Oshawa), Oshawa- District Stroke Centre
