Description (Service) COVID-19 Response 
For individuals who are not in receipt of Ontario Works (OW) or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), Emergency Assistance is available for those facing a crisis or emergency who have no immediate access to other supports. This assistance is temporary in nature. To apply for this benefit, contact the local OW office. See Emergency Assistance Online site for more information. 
 
Regular Service: 
Ontario Works Financial Assistance provides a monthly allowance based on family size, housing costs and income. Includes a monthly drug benefit card. 
  • Discretionary Benefits - may include dentures, emergency dental services, eyeglasses, special diet allowance, health care supplies, medical transportation funds, prosthetic devices, funerals and burials. Programs may be available to non-Ontario Works recipients upon income assessment. 
  • Employment Assistance - clients 18-65 years must participate in employment assistance activities unless they are living with a serious disability or illness or caring for preschool children. 
  • Employment Resource Centre - walk-in job search centre offers:  
    • access to computers, internet, fax, photocopier, telephone  
    • resource materials, job banks, labour market information  
    • assistance with resumes  
    • referrals to job counselling and training
     
  • Employment Start-Up Benefit - covers costs related to starting a job or work placement.  
  • Families with Children - assistance includes newborn child allowance, child care start-up costs, basic dental care for children. 
  • Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) - helps young parents ages 16-21 finish high school, improve parenting skills, locate and maintain employment. 
  • Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI) - assists low income residents including seniors, OW and ODSP recipients with rent or mortgage, utility, energy and heat arrears. Staff assist community members with housing searches, tenant and landlord education, tenant and landlord mediation, referrals to other community services on homelessness and affordable housing issues.
 
 
Interactive Voice Response (IVR) 1-800-808-2268 - individuals receiving Ontario Works will be provided an ID number and PIN. Automated information and payment details, payment history, file status. Information and announcements about Ontario Works. 
 
Welfare Fraud Hotline 1-800-394-7867 - to report allegations of fraudulent collection of Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program assistance. 
 
Saugeen Social Services also offers: 
  • volunteer placements  
  • job search programs - based on individual’s skills, experience and circumstances  
  • employment placement and job matching service  
  • basic adult education upgrading, high school upgrading, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, literacy and basic skills  
  • job skills training, development of skills for specific jobs  
  • on-the-job training  
  • referrals to self-employment programs
Service Details
Public Comments Clients may access applications for Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) through their OW social worker. 
 
There is no program called Student Welfare. Students who are between 16-18 and attending school but not living at home must meet strict criteria to be approved for assistance.

Programs are for Saugeen First Nation residents except for Employment Resource Centre which is open to everyone 
 
Program criteria: youth and adults 18 years and over in financial need * employable youth 16-17 years in financial need who cannot live at home but are attending school or seeking employment (funds must be managed by a trustee, guardian or agency) * financial need is determined by a review of income, liquid assets and living expenses
