Description

Description (Service) For individuals unable to complete their income tax and benefit return themselves and are unable to pay for assistance, the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) may be able to assist. Volunteers can help complete the income tax and benefit return if income is low and tax situation is simple.

Can prepare current and previous years' returns.

Service Details

Hours Clinics are full for the 2024 season. They are not taking anymore clients.
Upon signing up, the Owen Sound Community Volunteer Income Tax Program will call new clients on evenings after 5 pm to book an appointment to complete taxes.

Eligibility These suggested maximum income levels should serve as a guideline only

Single individual - up to $35,000
Two-person family - up to $45,000 (combined income of a couple, or one adult with one child under 18)
+ add $2,500 for each additional dependent child in the family

Interest income limited to under $1,000

Local community organizations have the flexibility to adjust or set additional eligibility criteria for taxpayers based on the local economic environment, the population they serve, and their own capacity

Volunteers do not prepare tax returns for complex situations such as:
  • returns for deceased persons
  • individuals who file for bankruptcy
  • self-employed individuals
  • individuals who report capital gains or losses
  • individuals who report employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses


Eligible taxpayers normally served by the CVITP include:
  • Indigenous peoples
  • Low-income individuals and social assistance recipients
  • Newcomers to Canada
  • Seniors
  • Students
Application By appointment only Clinics will be in person in 2024. No drop off of documents will be accepted, unless previously arranged. The clinic will be appointment-based in 2024.
Call and leave a message for the Owen Sound CVITP who will return the call after 5 pm to arrange an appointment. Upon signing up, appointment times and locations will be passed along.
Existing clients should call the Owen Sound CVITP directly to speak to volunteers.
Cancellations: Two business days notice prior to appointment date is required to cancel an appointment. No shows will lose the privilege of using the clinic
