* makes decisions on mergers, acquisitions and changes of ownership in the broadcasting sector 
* approves tariffs and certain agreements for the telecommunications sector 
* encourages competition in telecommunications markets 
* responds to requests for information and concerns about broadcasting and telecommunications issues
