Description (Service) Programs that provide financial assistance for people who are at risk for having their utilities cut off and have exhausted all other sources of financial assistance.

There are 3 avenues of assistance for residents of Northumberland County.

For Lakefront Utilities, customers who need assistance with paying their bill or have received a disconnect notice, please call The Help Centre at 905-372-2646 or toll free 1-888-698-3382.

For Hydro One, Veridian Connections, Enbridge Gas, and former Union Gas customers, assistance is available through LEAP (Low Emergency Assistance Program), for those needing assistance paying their bills. Customers should first call the Help Centre at 905-372-2646 or toll free 1-888-698-3382 for pre-application. Customers will then be directed to call 1-855-487-5327 (United Way Simcoe County) to begin the application process. The application is then sent to a local agency that will follow-up with the client and arrange payment of the utilities.

The Northumberland County Shelter Benefit provides funding for last month and rental deposit as well as rental arrears to avoid eviction; utility arrears to avoid disconnection or to have utilities reconnected, as well as a utility deposit.The assistance for utilities is for oil, propane and wood, if heating by wood stove.

ODSP and Ontario Works clients must contact their worker directly for the Shelter Benefit. All others are to call the in-take at 905-372-6846 ext 2468 or toll free 1-800-354-7051 ext 2468. The in-take worker will call back within 1 business day.
