Description (Service) COVID-19 Completing intakes, programming and conducting check-ins with clients through remote access and in person by appointment only. This includes, telephone, text, email and on-line platforms  
The mission of the John Howard Society is "Effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes." 
The Society offers many programs to families, parents, young offenders, inmates, homeless or under housed people, youths and adults.  
Programs include CORE (Traditional) Services which includes referral and direct service to inmates and families: 
* Adult Literacy- one on one Literacy Tutoring and small classroom instruction. * offer computer use classes. 
* Attendance Centre- works with high risk youth offenders ordered by the court to attend. Offers assessment and is developed to meet the young person's needs.  
* Community Service Orders- coordinates youth and adult offenders who, as a condition of their probation orders are required to perform community service 
* Direct Accountability- alternative to prosecution for eligible individuals who have been charged with minor criminal offenses. Persons are held accountable for their actions through community based sanctions. 
* Extra-judicial Measures- works with alleged Young Offenders and local Police instead of judicial proceedings. 
* Extra-judicial Sanctions- works with post charge youth in a diversion program 
* Institutional Services- range of direct services provided on request to inmates and their families. Services include but are not limited to, immigration, housing, identification, family support and weekly workshops. 
* Intermittent Community Work Program -arranges supervised placements where offenders can participate in community work projects as an alternative to serving an intermittent institutional sentence.  
* LEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance program)-Operated by the United Way of Simcoe County. LEAP provides emergency financial assistance to low income energy users. Clients who need to be assessed for help with utilities can call 1-855-487-5327 to initiate this assessment process. Once approved by United Way Simcoe, clients meet with a worker in the office here to complete an Intake process.  
*OESP (Ontario Electricity Support Program) -Operated by the Ontario Energy Board, this program gives a monthly credit to customers on their Hydro bills.  
* Partner Assault Response(PAR)- for men and women who use abusive behaviour to control their partners 
* Self Management Program (SMP) - help for adults to control anger and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills 
* SOS (Strategies; Options; Solutions- work with youth on areas such as: Conflict Resolution; Self Control and Emotional Self Regulation; Distorted Thinking and Beliefs; Stress Management; Anti-Theft, Healthy Relationships; Substance Education 
* Adult Transitional Housing  
* Youth in Transition Worker - Supports are intended to assist youth in transitioning to adulthood. Case Worker will support youth in working towards their personal goals in relationships, health and well-being, housing, employment, education, life skills, specific programming, and building connections within their communities.  
* Towards a Healthy Future - a FREE cooking program for youth ages 8-15 who are experiencing the effects of poverty in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. The program includes elements of safe food handling, following recipes, kitchen safety, community connectedness, and family togetherness.
