Service: Community Service Order Program
|Record #: VTC0217||Last Modified: 14 Sep 2020||Last Full Update: 13 Aug 2020|
|Description (Service)||A Community Service Order is a penalty set by a judge, usually as a condition of a Probation Order. It requires an offender to make amends to the community by performing a specified number of hours in the service of a non-profit organization. The offender is referred to the Program Coordinator, interviewed, then matched with an organization that can best use their skills or interests. Community Service Order clients work along with other volunteers in the community and are given the opportunity to do constructive work, gain new friends and attain some valuable job-related experience.
* Work may also be done for individuals, but only if they could not otherwise afford to do the work and they have a real need for assistance. Work may not be done in a situation where a paid employee is displaced by a Community Service Order client. Money or compensation is not to be accepted by the client. Organizations who wish to participate in the Program may contact the John Howard Society.
