DutiesThis Pet Visitation Service Facilitator position reports to the Coordinator of Volunteer Services at Central North Correctional Centre (CNCC). The team (dog/facilitator) are responsible for delivering a pet visitation service to special needs offenders (including women) at CNCC in compliance with the Ministry of the Solicitor General policies and procedures. 
 
The Pet Visitation team will: 
1. Promote a more positive environment for offenders on the Specialized Care and Women’s unit who may be having troubles adjusting to institutional life; 
2. Increase levels of trust with the collaboration of facilitator and dog; 
3. Reduce levels of stress through the companionship of facilitator and dog; 
4. Ease levels of anxiety and loneliness through interaction with facilitator and dog.

ClientsOur clients at Central North Correctional Centre are offenders (men and women) in a maximum-security institution serving two years less a day. Some offenders are awaiting trial and/or sentencing.

Skills/ExperienceCommunication & Interpersonal Skills - Possesses the interpersonal skills necessary to elicit support from correctional staff and possesses the judgment necessary to maintain respect and tolerance at all times ; Confidentiality - Honest, dependable and can maintain strict confidentiality ; Dependability & Trustworthiness - Respects the privacy and dignity of the inmate ; Friendly & Outgoing - Non-judgmental attitude toward offenders; Is friendly, patient and has good relational skills ; Listening Skills - Must adhere to direction of staff ; Patience - Facilitator and dog demonstrate high levels of patience ; Self-Motivated / Work Independently - Specially trained and certified dog handler with recognized organization who has received security clearance by the institution ; Skilled Labour - Facilitator and dog demonstrate certification in obedience program ; Team Work - Is sensitive to the hierarchy of protocol in a maximum security setting ; * Volunteer must provide annual health certificate from a registered veterinarian for each dog they will be utilizing for this service; 
* Volunteer must provide certificate of completion of recognized dog handling course/program for each dog being used in the pet visitation service; 
* Volunteer must provide annual insurance certificate acknowledging personal liability insurance in an amount of no less than $2M, for each service dog; 
* Volunteer must maintain Attendance and Waiver documents in binder; 
* Volunteer will ensure dog is cleaned and groomed prior to each visit to cut down on dander, odours and hair in the institution.
Commitment Length6 months minimum
Interaction LevelOne-on-one ; Handler and dog meet one:one with offender for 5-15 minutes each.

Friday: Evening (3 pm-4 pm)
