When Environment Canada issues an extreme heat or cold alert, rest areas are available to residents for relief from extreme weather conditions. These can include public buildings such as libraries or community centres during regular business hours. Other buildings such as malls or cinemas that have air conditioning/heating could also be used.

In Saugeen Shores, the following libraries may be accessed in extreme weather conditions.

  • Port Elgin Library - 708 Goderich St, Port Elgin - Mon, Tue, Fri, Sat 10 am-5 pm, Wed, Thu 10 am-7 pm, Sun 1 pm-4 pm
  • Southampton Library - 215 High St, Southampton - Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat 10 am-5 pm, Wed 10 am-7:30 pm, Sun 1 pm-4 pm (Summer hours vary - please visit library.brucecounty.on.ca/locations for details)

The following municipal facility is available to the public during regular business hours.

  • The Plex, 600 Tomlinson Dr, Port Elgin - Mon-Fri 8:30 am-4:30 pm

Under extreme circumstances, Saugeen Shores will open The Southampton Coliseum (6 Albert St S, Southampton), during extreme heat or cold alerts. Notification of opening can be found on the municipal website, www.saugeenshores.ca or social media.
