Description
Description (Service) Ontario Works Financial Assistance - monthly allowance based on family size, housing costs and income. Provides a monthly drug benefit card, special diet allowance, medical transportation and other services such as: 
 
Employment Benefit - helps with costs related to finding or starting a job or work placement 
 
Sustainable Housing Benefit (SHB) - assists low income residents including seniors, OW and ODSP recipients with rent or mortgage, utility, energy and heat arrears. Staff assist community members with: 
* housing searches 
* tenant and landlord education 
* tenant and landlord mediation 
* referrals to other community services on homelessness and affordable housing issues 
* Application Form 
 
Families with Children - helps with costs such as child care start-up costs, basic dental care for children, eyeglasses for children 
 
Ontario Works Employment Activities - offers volunteer placements, job search programs, employment placement based on individual’s skills, experience and circumstances 
* job matching service 
* basic education including basic adult upgrading, high school upgrading, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, literacy and basic skills 
* job skills training including development of skills for specific jobs and on-the-job training 
* support for self-employment and referrals to self-employment programs  
 
Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) - helps young parents (up to 25 years of age) finish high school, improve parenting skills and find and maintain employment * may include a temporary care program for children with no available parent 
 
Other Services:  
 
Discretionary Benefits - for OW or ODSP recipients, may include dentures, adult emergency dental services, adult eyeglasses, health care supplies, prosthetic devices, assistance with funerals and burials 
 
Transportation Program - shuttle service for OW clients who need transportation to attend any employment related activity, including anything needed to gain employment or employment skills. Discuss with case worker to make arrangements 
 
Interactive Voice Response (IVR) 1-800-808-2268 - automated information and payment details, payment history, file status, information and announcements about Ontario Works. Service not available to TTY users 
 
Welfare Fraud Hotline 1-800-394-7867 - to report allegations of fraudulent collection of Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program assistance
Service Details
Public Comments Due to a potential Canada Post strike, Ontario Works benefit cheques for October will not be mailed 
 
Grey County residents who receive Ontario Works benefits need to pick up their cheque or statement at the office where they regularly see their caseworker. Staff will be available Fri Sep 28 and Mon Oct 1 from 9 am to 4 pm. Recipients should be prepared to show photo ID in order to pick up their cheque or benefit statement.

Application If you have been on Ontario Works in the last four years you may complete an update online at grey.ca/ow and will be emailed within 24 hours with details of an appointment 
 
If you have not been on social assistance in the last four years you are encouraged to apply online at www.ontario.ca/socialassistance 
 
To speak to someone over the phone to complete a 15-30 minute screening and make a follow-up appointment, call 519-376-7112 ext 1117. This method may take longer to receive financial assistance
